In Year 3, we begin by carrying out baseline assessments to quickly identify pupils’ starting points and any gaps in understanding. This allows us to provide early, targeted support and ensures that additional provision is put in place promptly where needed. We also implement the Mastering Number programme to develop strong number sense and fluency. This focus on securing firm foundations supports pupils not only in their current learning but also equips them with the confidence and skills needed for future mathematical success.
We adopt a mastery approach to mathematics, ensuring that all pupils are given the opportunity to access and succeed in the same learning. Through the use of the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) approach, concepts are introduced using practical resources before moving to visual representations and then abstract methods. This enables all children to “get on the bus,” building deep understanding, promoting mathematical thinking, and supporting pupils to move through learning together with confidence.
Targeted interventions are arranged following formative and summative assessments to ensure all pupils receive the support they need to make progress. This may include pre-teaching key concepts prior to a lesson, for example exploring a method or vocabulary before it is introduced in class, or revisiting areas of difficulty, such as securing understanding of place value, number operations, or mathematical reasoning.
