Curriculum

Curriculum Intent and Implementation

At Middlemarch School we strive to challenge and engage our pupils through an enriching curriculum which has been designed to be broad, balanced and rich in experiences for all, taking into account the limited life experiences and opportunities for many of our children. It has been co-created, teachers and leaders included in its design and evaluation, ensuring all staff are aware of the progression of skills and knowledge across each year group, ensuring a logical sequence of teaching material.

The core values of our school on which we underpin our curriculum are: Ready, Respectful and Safe; we teach a broad and relevant curriculum which acknowledges the importance of Literacy and Numeracy whilst also promoting the wider creative subjects ensuring that pupils achieve their potential both academically and socially. With Reading at its centre where possible, not only meeting the requirements of the National Curriculum, we also make cross-curricula links to develop connections in learning, with a gradual introduction of new vocabulary to develop long term memory of key learning in line with Rosenshine’s principles.

Our inclusive curriculum also considers our ever growing and changing cohort which is currently boy heavy with increasing numbers of pupils with SEND, EAL and/or eligible for Pupil Premium funding. We enhance the curriculum through trips, workshops, visitors and after school clubs, as well as performances and productions, carefully planning these with the current cost of living crisis in mind for parents/carers, and creating lifelong memories of their journey with us.

Pupils tell us they enjoy the topics covered and learning new knowledge and skills they develop.  All children are prepared for their next step in education and to be successful citizens of our local community and the wider world.

Middlemarch School’s curriculum is taught by skilled staff who have the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver this broad curriculum. We regularly complete staff audits and plan CPD where needed for curriculum development. Additionally, to ensure adequate time is available to ensure full coverage and to teach subjects in depth, the majority of school teach a half-termly structured timetable.
